Chapter 7 - p42

February 13, 2013, at 12:00 AM

I always found this aspect of the khert comforting; no matter how many lives you go through, no memory ever gets thrown away. Of course that includes that time you got wasted and threw up all over your boyfriend's mother, but hey.

Fanfiction contest voting time! Because there were so many (awesome) entries, I've had to split voting up into four rounds. I know it's a pain, but it was the only fair way to do it. So go read the first eight entries and vote for your favourite! My apologies if Google Docs or the voting form get a little twitchy - they were the best quick solution I could come up with. Voting will be open until the next update - around 12amEST Friday. Go!

  2. Memories, eh? That opens up so many possibilities...

  3. Don't trust Elizabeth Sette, naught will come of it!

  4. Aww, Sette has a crush! ... Oh shit.

  5. I suddenly like the khert a lot more! It's inexplicable.

  6. When the voting deadline?
    somebloke on
  7. Huh I also just noticed there's some sort of silhouette in the khert panel, in the blue glow above the fishies. Wonder what that is.
    Humming-fly on
  8. Aww, she likes him.
    knucklekraken on
  9. That's a pretty good question, somebloke. Lemme see how many votes are in by Thursday night (before I update again) and if it seems enough I'll close the round and put up the next eight with Friday's update. Otherwise I'll wait 'til Monday.

  10. Elizabeth was Sette's first guess at Duane's name, wasn't it? Suggests Murkoph's been watching her somehow, for some time.
    CP on
  11. So, is the khert constantly expanding? Or is it getting more intricate, like some sort of fractal?
    N on
  12. Every page makes me more convinced Murkoph is who Duane used to be, on some level. After all, he died at least once to become a zombie, maybe when he came back he left behind the reprehensible parts of himself he hated.
    Nonsensicles on
  13. I miss seeing Duane already, but wow the Khert is a rather interesting place, what with all the memories, untold stories, and such. I wonder what others Sette will find, if she stumbles upon any more.
    Aika on
  14. I think this is probably the most unpleasant character we've met so far, and that's saying something!

  15. Murk quickly jokes his way into my heart and onto my favorite characters list

  17. Wow, CP, good observation. That's creepy as fuck if he has been lurking Sette and Duane for so long.
    gahitsu on
  18. Well, it makes sense that Murkoph would KNOW stuff. Think about it. If he's been trapped in the khert for God knows how long, and the khert holds all memories, Murkoph has presumably had access to all the knowledge in the world. He could lurk on the lives of everyone. And if the khert is timeless as most spiritual planes are, wouldn't it hold all past and FUTURE memories as well? It's a vault of infinite life and knowledge, so if you knew where to look you could find the answer to anything. And I don't know how savvy Murkoph is but he could presumably know a lot of things - least of all a joke Sette pulled on Duane earlier that Murk can bring out now to earn a laugh and gain her trust...... or maybe I'm reading too much into it XD
    Beat on
  19. Is Murkoph encased by a large, zit-filled hand?
    Karaii on
  20. Apparently the khert has a lot of memories of fish.
    feline256 on
  21. @ CP: Oh wow, good memory/catch!
    somebloke on
  22. Wow, this is so great. So many possibilities for stories!

  23. Did you really throw up all over your boyfriend's mother? How... endearing ;-)
    Grey on
  24. Well she could easily be playing along to better pump out what information she needs.
    Klaa on
  25. I like Sette's wan smile in panel 4, the first bit of relief she's had in a very tiring day, but... damnit, Sette, don't let a creepy stranger turn your head. And that ellipsis in panel 2... argh, she's thinking about it!
    RJF on
  26. Murk is right on Sette's level, at the moment anyhow. What a prince.
    Desipak on
  27. I think I'm falling in love. Go Sette, go! What could possibly go wrong?
    Linconclusive on
  28. Hehe Murkoph (close to mudkip?) Vs. Starfish now That would see justice done.
    Crestlinger on
  29. oh gebezus, my name's Elizabeth. D: that was weird! ... but dammit if I'm not liking Murk more and more here. Have to say that I want to see what damage he does. :3
    krad on
  30. For those wanting more Murkoph, here is everything related in the authors DeviantART: http://ashleycope.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=murkoph
    Squid on
  31. I don't understand how to read the fanfics :( I clicked on them but all that came up was a page with their name on it but no text!
    RubyMouse on
  32. Murkoph is giving me a whole new perspective on how to play an enticing, complex Chaotic Evil. Can't wait to see more.
    KnightofV on
  33. I don't think Murkoph is in any way a part of Duane in the physical or spiritual sense. They might know each other, somehow, or be made by the same means, but they're both their own people. I believe he's one of Ashley's favorite original creations; he's her avatar on Deviant Art (animated as eating bloody flesh) and when I commented on how he was staring at me, she responded teasingly that he was going to get me if I looked way. <3 I think she likes him far too much for him not to be entirely unique. I do think the disturbance that is attracting the khertfish right now might have something to do with Duane though. Possibly him showing up to get Sette.
    NoniKi on
  34. I friggin love Murkoph's silly bodylanguage, especially him putting his head sideways to look at Sette better on this page. He looks like a relaxed, playful puppy trying to wiggle into her heart.
    Noniki on
  35. I like the khert as some sort of memory keeper of all life forms.^^ Still don´t like Murkoph much, he gives me the creeps. D: About Round one and the eight fics there, have read them all, will give each a comment later once i find the time to read it again properly. It got a pretty wide range in each page amount, quality and ideas which is good. I got two favorites "Life is funny" and "Unsounded fanfiction" who might end up being first in this round. I already voted for one of those two and i´m glad that we dont get to see the poll results right away. Cause i´m pretty sure the fic i didn´t vote for of those two is leading by now.^^
    James Rye on
  36. I just wonder what he did to Duane for Duane to trap him in this unliving/undying state.
    spiff on
  37. So basically she's in purgatory, sort of. That's neat, finally we have an idea of where she actually is.
    Elmion on
  38. OMG! Rapist, run Sette!
    Alex on
  39. @rubymouse if you are having trouble viewing the fanfics you might want to try a different browser. also smartphones have troubles with google docs so you may need to get on a laptop to read the stories.
    Gibandit on
  40. Can I marry the comic? Or maybe just go into the distant future where more of it is done?
    on
  41. Holy hell, Murkoph's face in that last panel. He's done nothing but talk and yet he's so horrible and so alive-- how to even describe it? The whole of his being is licentious, somehow. He looks like he might burst with joy at the thought of the chaos he's going to work in the world when he gets out, and he's talking this frightened little girl into getting him there. Ashley you are so gifted, I hope you know it. I am genuinely afraid for and can't imagine what this man is going to do once he is free.
    JL on
  42. No Sette! He's a perv! I hope she has enough sense to realize he's playing her. I can't imagine that she'd ever be that stupid. She is a kid though, lack of judgement and all.
    Xen on
  43. I think what gets me the most is that he says he's been there too long dreaming of girls "tightening his trou with screams" and she doesn't even pick up on it!???? Ohhhhhhhh, I don't wanna see what he'd do to her!
    Karyl on
  44. I am really liking Murkoph so far. Set him free, Sette, set him freeeeeee

  45. Also CP, wow that's a good observation. I had forgotten about that. Intriguing!

  46. Vaguely creeped out by how cute the expressions on this page are. Just. I can't resist the cuteness. And it's creepin me ouuuuut. :3

  49. I believe someone really likes drawing Murkoph. Methinks he'll stick around the comic for a while.
    Julian Adler on
  50. It seems like Sette thinks she might've found a kindred spirit; well, at least someone who's got more in common with her than Duane, moral-wise. Except Sette isn't really bad at all, and this guy...I think he's on the far side of "bad". Dammit, Duane...why couldn't you have just stayed put in the first place...
    Rogue Android on
  51. I just had one question about the voting process. Since there will be a second place winner, does that mean that the run-off will have the top two submissions from each round?
    James Wilson on
  52. @James Wilson
    Sounds good to me.
    Ashley on
  53. Lol, wrong name on the contest page, but whatever. Grace Wolf works fine as well. I hope you liked it. Sorry it's so long. I tried to get at least 20 pages, and managed to. Then everything got screwed up when it went through the blender of doom I call my email. Anyway, look forward to the contest results! Some of those stories were really amazing.
    Shiko Hayashi on
  54. @ Beat, no, I think you've got the right of it. I was wondering HOW Murk was able to allude back to when Sette jokingly guessed Duane's name as 'Elizabeth'. I thought I was over-thinking it too, but I think you're right, in some form or another. ...Now, I must go reflect why the hell I enjoy Murkoph's smile so much.
    Carrie on
  55. Bwar, I was right. In the khert.
    E_O on
  56. @Ashley Thanks, I was wondering because it was hard to choose between them. I ended up voting for the one that reminded me of a Mark Twain story. Even though I found it a little hard to read at first, the writing was masterful. I'm going to have a hard time convincing myself to vote for me when I'm up. Maybe a bribe of ice cream will do the trick?
    James Wilson on
  57. I'd feel rather crass if I voted for myself, so I think I'll have to abstain this round. I can safely say right now that it'll be a miracle if my story got through, these are some truly excellent entries and I believe everyone involved should feel proud of themselves. MEANWHILE, fingers crossed that Sette is just playing sly to extract information on her surroundings. I know she's desperate, but she'd have to be pretty thoroughly whacked out to trust a character like Murkoph. Nice metaphysics, by the by! I've always loved how the Unsounded universe basically operates on Linux rules.
    Rasputin on
  58. For some reason Murkoph reminds me of a lion... I wonder if he's the same as Sette?...
    Natalie Wryte on
  59. That's a stupidly short voting deadlinel, even if it's just round one.

  60. love the comic, check out your profile on goodreads.com
    cali on
  61. @Zam
The results are stark already. Extending the voting window isn't going to accomplish much. The stories will all stay up, you can still read them if you haven't had a chance yet.
